He reveals what is often misunderstood about the political diversity of Latinos in America. The most asked question he gets is why any Latino voted for Donald Trump. He talks about this and a lot more, including exploring how Hispanic Republicans relate to climate change. Geraldo Cadava is a professor of History and Latina and Latino Studies at Northwestern University. He received a Ph.D. in History from Yale University in 2008, and he received a B.A., also in History, from Dartmouth College in 2000. His areas of expertise are Latino History, the United States-Mexico Borderlands, Latin American immigration to the United States, and American politics. Listen Now! The Art House Over 10 years ago, Elli Sparks was struggling to make sense of climate change. She said, “That summer in Virginia was insanely hot. I remember being in the community pool and when I popped my head out of the water, the water evaporated so quickly I felt downright cold! I also remember walking with coworkers to the cafeteria and thinking, ‘Why in the world are none of these people alarmed about climate change?’” She was really struggling, so she wrote a story for herself. “Tell Me A Story” is a conversation between a parent and a child, a story within a story. Elli, who is now Citizens’ Climate Lobby’s Director of Field Development, has shared the story with friends, fellow climate advocates, and at public gatherings. She gave Citizens’ Climate Radio permission to turn the story into a short radio play. “Tell Me a Story” is performed by Zeke and Anna Loomis-Weber. Anna Weber-Loomis just finished her first year at Sterling College in Vermont. She is studying outdoor education and sustainable agriculture. Zeke Weber-Loomis just finished her first year of high school. She spends her free time drawing, playing ukulele, and running cross-country and track. “It is, what it is?” Donald Trump’s infamous words about the rising COVID-19 death toll in the USA, may accidentally and unintentionally contain keen insights. “It is” a system involving the Coronavirus (SARS COV 2) and humans and the “what it is” refers to how the virus invades us and replicates itself, a system guided and limited by only the laws of physics and chemistry that drive the natural world. Sadly and predictably, mankind was poorly prepared to deal with this pandemic, especially when it became apparent that the virus did not care about borders, politics, economies, education, or even sports. Science to the rescue! ​ Unfortunately, “it is what it is” applies equally well the series of events that will necessarily follow from our relentless modification of the global carbon cycle. The wake-up call that we have received from our poor-handling of the current pandemic may provide a limited window in which to encourage climate action or it might result in a period of “crisis fatigue”. As a student (B.S. Zoology, University of California, Santa Barbara; M.S. Ecology; Kansas State University, and PhD Ecology, University of Utah) he conducted research on the behavioral and evolutionary ecology of animals and plants. During his 24 years as a professor at Texas Tech University (Department of Biological Sciences and Honors College) he introduced students to nature by teaching field courses in Jamaica and Belize, along the Rio Grande, and 6 summers teaching marine biology and scuba on sailboat in Caribbean. He also endeavored to improve the scientific and environmental literacy of students and general public by helping to develop undergraduate programs in Integrated Science and Natural History; Humanities, graduate programs in STEM for middle school and secondary school teachers, and serving as Editor-in-Chief of the Encyclopedia of Earth. Her father urged her to get out, saying “There is nothing for you here, pet.” Hill went on to study in Moscow and at Harvard and served under three United States presidents. But in both Russia and the United States, she saw troubling reflections of her hometown and similar populist impulses. Professor Connel Fullenkamp discusses the organization Blue Green Future, where his work centers around creating a new economic paradigm that acknowledges our economy depends on nature and embeds ecology into our economic choices. Connel Fullenkamp is Professor of the Practice and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Economics Department at Duke University. Prior to joining the Duke faculty in 1999, Connel was a professor in the Finance Department of the College of Business at the University of Notre Dame. He has published articles on financial market development and regulation, the economic and policy implications of risk sharing, and the macroeconomic impacts of immigrant remittances. Recent publications include “Toward a Nature-Based Economy” in Frontiers in Climate Change and “Financing Conservation by Valuing Carbon Services Produced by Wild Animals” in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. His op-eds have appeared in Newsweek and The New York Times. Connel has been a Visiting Scholar and Short-Term Expert for the International Monetary Fund’s Institute for Capacity Development since 1999, which consists of training government officials around the world. He is a member of the Institute’s finance team, which trains central bankers and other officials in financial market development, inclusion, and regulation. He is also an educational consultant to The New York Times. Originally from Sioux Falls, SD, Connel was named a Presidential Scholar by the U.S. Department of Education in 1983. He then earned his BA in Economics from Michigan State University, which named him one of its Alumni Distinguished Scholars. In 1985, he was named a Truman Scholar. He earned his MA and PhD degrees in Economics at Harvard University, where he was also awarded a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship. Moderated by Kaavya Kasturirangan.
