First, caloric restriction, typically a 20% reduction in overall calorie intake, has been linked to increased lifespan in several animal models. However, the positive effects may stem from avoiding overeating rather than restriction per se. Second, a plant-based diet, with less animal products and refined sugars and more fruits, veggies, and whole foods, seems beneficial for aging and longevity. Third, fasting, or limiting eating to specific time windows, might mimic the benefits of caloric restriction by causing 'hormesis', mild stressors that boost resilience to aging-related changes. The optimal diet is likely individual, influenced by factors like genetics and age, and should be monitored through measures of biological age and personal well-being. Back in 1963 when the Clean Air Act was written, legislators acknowledged that California was ahead of the curve and wrote a waiver into the law allowing the Golden State to set its own stricter standards. At the "Written in Stone - Natural History Through the Jeweler's Eye" Exhibition opening at the Natural History Institute on Friday, April 28th, we are joined by five of the nine featured artists in a panel discussion, moderated by Edie Dillon. Panel members are: Klee Benally Neil Hunt Lesley Aine McKeown William Ford Kit Carson Join us as we learn about the inspiration and process behind these artists' work, as well as how their art relates to the natural and cultural environment. "Written in Stone: Natural History Through the Jeweler's Eye" As jewelry artists, we draw inspiration from Arizona’s fascinating geology, which has both an awe-inspiring beauty and a complex history of extractive mining practices. Our work makes use of the same elements – stone and metal – and transforms them in creative ways to reveal and share their essential beauty. We cut stone and polish it. We look for subtleties in color and use contrasts in texture. We build compositions so that each stone sings in harmony. There is a certain alchemy at work here: the same rocks and minerals once viewed simply as commodities are transformed through loving attention to detail. The goal of Written in Stone is to showcase a diversity of area jewelers whose work exhibits both a high degree of craftsmanship and a sensitivity to, and inspiration from, the natural and cultural landscape. In celebration of the 75th anniversary of the UDHR Cultural Survival is hosting an event at the Ford Foundation Center for Social Justice Many positive developments for Indigenous Peoples’ rights have taken place since the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Many more spaces have opened up for Indigenous participation, and new agreements protecting the rights of Indigenous Peoples have been adopted, yet, respect for the rights of Indigenous Peoples around the world remains far from fulfilled. In many parts of the world today, Indigenous Peoples are still facing grave human rights abuses and challenges. A great deal of work is needed to bring the issues of human rights of Indigenous Peoples to the front and center of global discussions. At this event, we will reflect on the achievements of the global Indigenous rights movement, and address the work still left to do to fulfill the promise of human rights for Indigenous Peoples.
