ABOUT SLAM DUNKLEY 🌱✨
Dumonde Slam Dunkley was born in Besançon, France, and is of Jamaican and Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape descent. After spending most of his childhood in Europe, Slam settled in the Appoquinomink marshlands of Delaware.
Before attending law school, Slam was a Division 1 Rower at Saint Joseph's University where he graduated with a B.A. in Philosophy and a M.S. in Organizational Development and Leadership. Slam then came to the University of Arizona to develop a deeper understanding of legal and political systems that hinder American progress.

Slam was an active member of the law community, having served as both 1L delegate and subsequently President of the Native American Law Student Association (NALSA), President of the Black Law Student Association, member of the Arizona Journal of Environmental Law and Policy, and was a member of the Barry Davis National Mock Trial Team.
In his two years on campus, Slam led and helped organize nearly 100 educational, cultural, career-oriented, and community-based events and wrote an award-winning and published Legal Note on Indian Water rights.

Slam then spent his 3L year in Lyon, France, where he received an LL.M. in International and European Business Law.
He will continue his legal education at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Slam is also an outstanding board member for Earth Guardians, where he helps us train & empower diverse youth to be leaders at the intersections of the climate crisis.

Hey friends and Earth Guardians, it’s really hard to explain what we’re going through here in Western North Carolina.

I’ve lived here my whole life, and the devastation from Hurricane Helene is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. It’s been a whirlwind of emotions—shock, grief, resilience, and maybe a little hope. But things are tough. So many people still don’t have water, power, internet, or even cell service, and every little thing takes way longer than usual. Some of our friends and family are leaving because their basic needs aren’t being met. And hearing that the body count keeps rising—likely into the thousands—makes it all feel so overwhelming.

What’s keeping us afloat right now is the love and support we’re receiving from our community and from people like you.

Please don’t forget about us.

Keep talking about what we’re going through because this disaster is about more than just a storm. It’s connected to climate change, capitalism, and colonization. If humans created these systems, we also have the power to change them. We owe it to the next seven generations to figure out a better way to live—in harmony with the planet and each other.

During our annual Indigenous Youth Leadership Initiative Training, trainees explored their visions of What If Indigenous Futures THRIVED? What would that look like?

Through heartfelt reflections and self-directed films, they imagined a world where Indigenous Futurisms flourish, blending traditional wisdom with modern solutions for climate resilience and environmental justice, creating an equitable and regenerative future for all.

This is more than a vision—it's a call to action. 

From cultural reclamation to advocating for sovereignty and self-determination, these young leaders create ethical and sustainable futures for their communities and beyond.

At Earth Guardians, our Indigenous Youth Leadership Initiative and Crews prove that intergenerational and diverse leadership and decision-making power are vital to driving meaningful change and having an abundant future.

On November 16, WECAN hosted a COP29 Press Conference articulating a new legal framework and economy based on living in balance with Earth’s natural systems. Presenters discussed the Rights of Nature movement, its successes, and how it can offer a systemic framework for defending and protecting biodiversity, communities, and the climate.

Speakers included: Casey Camp-Horinek (Ponca Nation), Ponca Nation Environmental Ambassador and WECAN Board Member and Project Coordinator, Turtle Island/USA; Nnimmo Bassey, Director of Health of Mother Earth Foundation, Nigeria; Tom Goldtooth, Executive Director of Indigenous Environmental Network (IEN); and Osprey Orielle Lake, Executive Director of the Women’s Earth and Climate Action Network (WECAN), USA.

WECAN presented “A Global Initiative for a Universal Declaration on the Rights of Nature,” which outlines a strategy for national and subnational governments to have a mechanism for countries to adopt a Universal Declaration on the Rights of Nature. This event was part of the Women’s Earth and Climate Action Network (WECAN) three-day Climate Justice Forum: “Facing the Climate Emergency on the Road to COP27: Solutions and Perspectives from Global Women and Gender Diverse Leaders,” taking place September 20-22.

Women leaders are building critical strategies for national and international divestment that call for justice and accountability from the financial sector and governments to phase out fossil fuels and deforestation, while advocating for a Just Transition that places people and planet first.

During this WECAN press conference at COP27, speakers shared vital reports and strategies for ending the era of fossil fuels and supporting communities and ecosystems impacted by extractive industries and Indigenous rights violations.
